What is a slab leak?
A slab leak is a water or sewer leak that lies beneath the foundation of your home or building, either in copper tubing, cast iron drain lines, or PVC.
How do I find a slab leak?
Call a professional. Sometimes you can “guesstimate” where your slab leak is by listening for running water or feeling for hot spots on the floor. But remember that water takes the path of least resistance, so just because you see water, doesn’t mean that’s always where the leak is.
What causes slab leaks?
There are many causes of slab leaks. Foundations in Dallas / Ft. Worth shift quite frequently due to our soil composition and drastic weather changes. This can cause your pipes to erode by rubbing against other pipes or the concrete foundation itself. In some cases, sewer pipes can snap in half leaving a separation in your drainage system. Electrolysis and bad installation can also cause sub slab leaks. Here’s a link to a previous article where we discussed the causes of water leaks more in depth.
How much does it cost to locate a leak?
The cost of leak location depends on the type of leak you have. If you have a water leak, you’re looking at anywhere between $100-$500 for testing. Sewer leak detection can be a little more, depending on how many leaks a house has or how large a plumbing system is.
How much does a slab leak cost to fix?
Again, depending on the type of leak, the cost can vary. For a simple repair, you’re probably looking at somewhere between $2,000-$3000. If there are multiple leaks or a lot of work is necessary to uncover the leak, the final bill can be anywhere up to $10,000.
How long does it take to repair a slab leak?
It can take anywhere from 1 – 3 days to repair a water leak. Sewer leaks can be more extensive, but usually a week maximum for almost any residential job.
